SIE EXAM TESTS APPLICANT'S KNOWLEDGE OF FIXED INCOME SECURITIES

Be prepared for questions on fixed income securities if you plan to sit for the Securities Industry Essentials Exam. If you are new to the securities industry, the term "fixed income securities" might cause you to check a financial dictionary. By this term, the securities industry means bonds, all types of bonds. For example, the SIE Exam asks about Treasury bills, notes and bonds. You should know about corporate and municipal bonds also. Make sure that you are familiar with all the subsections of fixed income securities, as listed in the SIE Exam Content Outline published by FINRA. Here is the link to the SIE Exam Content Outline . Pay close attention to Section 2.1.2 on Debt Instruments, another name for Fixed Income Securities. SIE EXAM TESTS KNOWLEDGE OF EQUITY SECURITIES

Are you planning to sit for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam? If so, be aware that the SIE exam tests your knowledge of equity securities. For example, know the difference between different types of shares, such as authorized, issued, outstanding and treasury shares. Know about preferred stock, how it differs from common shares. Know the characteristics of participating preferred, callable preferred, cumulative preferred, and convertible preferred. As to convertible preferred shares, you must be able to work problems ascertaining conversion price, conversion ratio, parity price, what strategies to adopt if a company does, in fact, call in its convertible preferred shares. If you are weak on any of these areas, you may want to consider Bob Eder's Study for the Securities Industry (SIE) Exam . Its Chapter 3 is entitled Equity Securities , and covers all of the above topics, giving examples and practice questions to allow you to test your familiarity and knowledge

TAKING THE SIE EXAM? BE PREPARED FOR QUESTIONS ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF MARKETS

If you are planning to take the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam, be prepared for questions on different types of markets. For example, the SIE Study Outline available from FINRA lists types of markets (1.2.1), such as the primary market, the secondary market, the third market, and the fourth market.  Make sure you know the difference between these markets before you go in to take the test.
