TAKING THE SIE EXAM? BE PREPARED FOR QUESTIONS ON MUNICIPAL FUND SECURITIES

One of the topics that many SIE candidates fail to study is that of municipal fund securities. These are much like investment companies, but they are exempt from registering under section 2(b) of the Investment Company Act.  These are some examples of municipal fund securities: Able Programs, Local Government Investment Pools, and 529 Plans.  Make sure that you are familiar with municipal fund securities, including the different types of securities and what they mean. Bob Eder's Study for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam covers municipal fund securities in detail in Chapter 6, including expenses of each type of security, plus MSRB rules on dealing in these securities. Here is the link to FINRA's Content Outline for the SIE exam.   See especially municipal fund securities under 2.1.5 of FINRA's Content Outline. SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PUTS AND CALLS

For this post, we talk about some common mistakes when talking about put and call options. Since the SIE exam covers options, mastering correct terminology before sitting for the exam is important. Let's consider call options first. The purchaser of a call option, on an opening transaction, gains the right to purchase stock or some other asset, such as gold or bonds, at a certain specified price for a specified period of time. The seller of a call, on an opening transaction, is called the "writer," and is obligated to sell stock or some other asset. Now speaking of puts, the buyer of a put option, on an opening transaction, gains the right to sell stock or some other asset, at a certain specified price for a specified period of time. The seller of a put, on an opening transaction, is called the "writer," and is obligated to purchase stock or some other asset. Bob Eder's text  Study for the SIE Exam  contains a full discussion of put and call options in Chapt...

If you plan on taking the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam, are you prepared for questions asking about "market structure"? FINRA lists Market Structure under 1.2 of its  SIE Content Outline . Market Structure includes types of markets in the securities industry. For example, what is the difference between the primary market and the secondary market? What does the third market entail, and who are the participants? How about the fourth market? Do you know the difference between the markets, such as the fourth market and the primary market? Bob Eder's text Study for the SIE Exam contains a full discussion of Market Structure on page four, five and six, giving examples and practice questions. Here is the link to FINRA's Content Outline for the SIE exam.  See especially Market Structure under 1.2 of FINRA's Content Outline. OUR SIE EXAM STUDY BOOK FOLLOWS FINRA'S CONTENT OUTLINE

Study Guide Reference Numbers for the SIE exam. We follow the syllabus and content outline published by FINRA for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam. As an aid for our readers, we have included FINRA outline numbers for reference both in the text and in the two exams at the end of the book. The SIE exam does not quiz a candidate on the outline numbers. We insert them in our book solely for those readers who want to refer to the outline. Furthermore, these references demonstrate to you our reader that we have not inserted extraneous material that is not covered by the SIE exam. We list the outline numbers listed in FINRA's Study Guide, such as (1.2.3) or (2.4.2). If you wish, you can freely disregard these reference numbers, but they can help you, if you wish, locate the topic in FINRA's Study Guide. TAKING THE SIE EXAM? MAKE SURE THAT YOU STUDY AND KNOW CHARACTERISTICS OF EQUITY SECURITIES!

For applicants taking the SIE exam, FINRA's Content Outline for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam lists knowledge required of equity securities in section 2.1.1. This includes ownership of these securities, order of liquidation, and limited liability of shareholders. It also specifically includes voting rights, the nature of convertible equity securities, and lastly, Rule 144, dealing with with control and restricted securities. Bob Eder J.D. treats each one of these topics in Chapter 3 of Study for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam. Here is Bob Eder's treatment of limited liability of common shares: Limited Liability of Common Shares One of the interesting aspects of ownership of common shares is that a shareholder incurs only limited liability for the debts of the issuing corporation. This is not meant to imply that the value of common stock cannot decrease to zero, which it often does for stock of inferior corporations. But no matter how much debt is ...

SIE EXAM ASKS QUESTIONS ABOUT TYPES OF SECURITIES OFFERINGS

If you plan to sit for the Securities Industry Essentials exam (SIE), you should be aware that the SIE exam asks questions about securities offerings. How do I know this? I know this because Section 1.4 of FINRA's Content Outline indicates that the applicant should study and know types and kinds of offerings. For example, Section 1.4 of the Content Outline indicates that a candidate should expect to be asked about public versus private offerings, initial public offerings, secondary offerings, and follow-on offerings. Also shelf offerings, both definition and purpose. Bob Eder's book, Study for the SIE Exam , covers  in detail  all these topics and more. Here is the link to FINRA's Content Outline for the SIE exam.
